Same Old Brand New

February 28, 2006 · 1 Comment

I felt that something was wrong even before entering the UP campus. I was surprised upon seeing that the Ylanan entry was still closed even though it was around 7-730 in the morning already! Well, we have decided to take the Philcoa route instead but we’re also startled after noticing that the carless oval rule was still in place! I thought it was only in effect last week but today it was actually more different. Some entries were somewhat blocked too like the road between NISMED and NSRI. (I wonder how IKOT/TOKI jeeps reacted to that situation)

In the afternoon, I was stupefied in seeing a lot of USC campaign posters that even reached the Shopping Center. My reaction on listening to the first set of council nominees that I have encountered in class was like they’re just the same old brand new set of nominees with the same old anti-admin stand with the same old series of arguments repeated over and over again. I hate to admit it but I’m really kinda sick of such things. I’m neither a Pro nor an Anti. Why? Because I make it sure that I see both sides of the coin first before doing any other crazy thing.

So what’s your side?

Chaos Theory – Revisited

February 25, 2006 · Leave a Comment

It is really getting weird and horrible as time passes by: 74 dreams crushed on a game show stampede, the Leyte landslide, and the recent declaration of being in a state of emergency.

I was even shocked upon reading the consecutive emails I had received from my high school's yahoogroup (Pisaybatch2003) pointing to this Pisay05 blog that discussed and made updates about a student being victimized by an acid-water-jug within the campus premises.(mercury poisoning)
It seems that morality nowadays is degrading slowly while violence is rising exponentially.. What do you think?

New Linux Worm?

February 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Well, I have been skimming some sites:

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2150647/linux-worm-loose

http://blogs.securiteam.com/index.php/archives/303

…saying that there is a worm on Linux that propagates via exploit holes on Mambo and the PHP XML RPC library. (Actually, I’m monitoring the Digg portal but the thing is, there wasn’t any instance of this subject. Maybe they just consider it lame to discuss such an old issue that is being reborn again.) Some comments on other related articles indicate that it is only a PHP 1.X problem (a very old PHP version). But wait, Mambo and PHP runs on Wind0ze too, right? I guess that this is NOT a platform-specific problem.

…But this creates another reason for me to prefer Java Server Pages over PHP in Web Development. What do you think?

Excited on the new features of Ubuntu DapperDrake Flight 4? “Novell engineers have been working on some amazing 3D desktop effects. They have released their work to the community and that work has made it into Dapper.

XGL

February 17, 2006 · Leave a Comment

The first 3d desktop effect I had seen or played with was the Mac OS X. Next was the Project Looking Glass 3D via a Slax LiveCD. Then, there was Micro$oft Vista (I prefer to call it LongHorn for obvious reasons) that has 3d effects too!

But wait, XGL is out in the wild! “It includes special effects which would put even the upcoming Micro$oft Vista OS to shame!

The Bleeding Edge

February 15, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I have just realized that there were a lot of bleeding edges I had encountered recently. From this post, the update I had received from a friend was that they will be ending their Bash scripting stuff and will be starting with another, maybe Tcl/Tk or Perl. The bleeding edge comes from a double-edged sword – the first edge makes your computing skills bleed due to adaptation to a new concept (and OS), and the second edge is boosting one’s Linux computing skills more.

Another bleeding edge for me is working my way out of a Sparc server. For starters, installing Sun packages (SUNWpackage_name) can be done via the command:

pkgadd package_name

provided that /var/spool/pkg contains the packages for install. Well, it’s like using Synaptic or apt-get in Ubuntu where the package manager searches for the package for install in its cache folder (I really tend to sniff cache stuffs, haha). The only difference is that apt-get can download it from its repository list whereas the Sun package manager – I really don’t know yet if it’s capable of doing the same process.

The bottom line is that it’s also a *nix box, so as long as there is a powerful terminal, a Linux or Mac user should easily adapt to a Solaris machine. What do you think?
