Saturday Fusion

January 30, 2007 · 1 Comment

Last Saturday was *somewhat* a blast – I was in the Fusion Convention that was held at the DLSU-Taft. The event featured (iirc):

  • a PhilNITS Talk (where one of my orgmates almost won at the raffle part, eek!)
  • a Wireless Technology Talk (where I got bored because it’s like stock knowledge from one of my trainings/electives)
  • a 3D Modelling Talk (where it was already past lunch and everyone’s very hungry)
  • a “WolfPac Talk” (the first to use a Macbook in the convention)
  • an Open Source Talk delivered by Adrian Co and his team from Exist, a software company that strongly supports Java Technology and the open source community in the Philippines (yeah, I forgot to ask them about their views on Java now Open Source)
  • a Podcast Talk with an introduction to Apple in Education presented by Sarah Lumang (just like the Apple Roadshow we had last year)
  • (and lastly) a NLP Talk that featured researches in natural language processing.

For pictures, just stay tuned at Compute. Compile. Compete., the official blog of the ACM Student Chapter of the University of the Philippines or just visit its Flickr site.

On a side note, it’s just weird that there was no announcement or publicity of this event on the Internet. Or perhaps it’s due to the event’s limitations? Well, I wasn’t able to attend the Blog Parteeh of the same day. *sigh*

New Thing! You?

January 25, 2007 · 9 Comments

Sometimes you really need to think twice before doing things..Take a look at this one:

Thing You!

This was posted on a comfort room’s door of one of the offices in the campus. Where? Secret! So who’s the thing? Or maybe the writer’s name was Thing You!?! Haha! I thought my eyes were just blurry but a friend of mine verified and captured it using a cameraphone. Finders keepers? *grin*

UPCAT 2007 Results - Released!

January 22, 2007 · 11 Comments

Yes, you’ve read it right. The UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) results are now posted at the UP Office of Admissions and also on their website. A WAP site is also available for searching.

Now, does this mean a slower internet connection in UP due to massive network traffic? What do you think?

Anyway, congratulations to the incoming freshmen of 2007!

Weird Google

January 20, 2007 · 2 Comments

Yesterday, Blogger and Blog*Spot were unavailable for some time but minutes before midnight, GMail was acting like crazy! Even now, I still encounter the same server errors like “error code 717″! Weirdness indeed!

So what’s with Blogger? Recently, I had received an email from them about my old blog:

This system has detected that your blog has characteristics that resemble spam. Since you’re an actual person reading this, your blog is probably not a spam blog. Automated spam detection is inherently fuzzy, and we sincerely apologize for this erroneous result.

Wow! Actually I had already migrated all of its entries to my WordPress.com account then continued writing in this current blog. WordPress.com didn’t even considered my journal as spam! Weird!

On their Adsense updates, you might have noticed that I had already removed the ads on my blog. I haven’t read any of its new policies, so it resulted that I failed their new rules. I already requested for revalidation but their response was somewhat not accurate. As far as I can remember, I didn’t violate any of the policies but it seems that some publishers will really need to make changes.

Their message also noted that:

Please bear in mind that subsequent or duplicate appeals may not be considered and you may not receive any further communication from us. We appreciate your understanding.

Okay. Fine!

Looking for Healthy Foods?

January 19, 2007 · 7 Comments

I wonder how this food tastes like:

Windows Food ?

It’s good as long as there are no bugs in it. On a side note, I’m getting curious on this Latasia Fusion diner at UP Diliman. Either I need more reviews aside from its website or I get to try it out all by myself. Why? I’m sick of eating meat when I’m at UP. I just don’t know if they really offer healthy food alternatives. What do you think?

WordPress Updates

January 17, 2007 · 4 Comments

It has only been a week or two since the recent update of WordPress. Now, version 2.0.7 is already out in the wild!

You might be surprised in the popular WordPress song but this one somewhat shocked me because it’s the first spam after a period of testing different antispam plugins:

1st Spam Comment on my WordPress blogI had already tried the Challenge plugin but Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam plugin does the job better. Obviously, my Akismet plugin was still intact.

How about you? What’s your antispam plugin?

Zooof!

January 13, 2007 · 2 Comments

If there’s Zooomr, then there’s Zooof – The Family Network:

With Zooof you can discover, expand, and maintain your family ties!

Will this service click to Filipinos? Imagine the feature of interactive family trees that also shows the 2nd, 3rd party, or even the Nth party in a certain Xth level!

I just wonder what Zooo social networking service will be created next.. Do you have a hunch?

What’s UP?

January 8, 2007 · 1 Comment

What's UP?

So, what’s UP? I thought I already had some eyesight problems but not until I tried loading the same site on my Opera (configured to be identified as IE). Actually, it’s just a minor case of a CSS problem but that’s not the issue here. It’s always important that the information is delivered in its simplest usable form.

By the way, that’s Firefox 1.5.0.7 on Ubuntu 6.06.

How about the website featured here? :D

Top News for the start of 2007

January 8, 2007 · 6 Comments

Now here’s the list (a hitlist?) that had hit me on the start of the month:

1. WordPress Security Hole – vulnerability? Does this mean that PHP (being WordPress’s platform) is so easy to learn that made it easy to be cracked? On the lighter side, it was fixed right away on its 2.0.6 release.

2. Smith = Garci issue? Oops, nothing really new here. Expect more bad comparisons to come. Not only such things but also more violence in the streets – rallyists shouting here and there rejecting everything yet they don’t even have proposals to suggest (like simply saying “NO” instead of saying “NO, but “). I don’t believe in surveys for I always imagine surveys being made in very biased places. Such surveys are just a preview of the big picture, they don’t necessarily represent the whole thing. Expect more political killings too. Argh! When will they ever learn?!

3. Ederlyn – Is she familiar to you? Maybe this is a sign of alien invasion. It kinda reminded me of the phenomenon with Death Note’s character, Kira.

4. Microsoft support & troubleshooting? Unbelievable! Are those utilities really effective? Is the Help utility helpful? Nah, I’m more curious on DieHard.

5. I’m not fond of making predictions but some people’s un-predictions and predictions are weird but true.

So are these news new at all?
